As we move into the second decade of the twenty-first century, insurgency is at the forefront of armed conflict affecting our study of politics, law, society and military history. The Institute for Southern Studies and the Walker Institute will host the symposium “War By Another Means: Perspectives on Insurgencies” at the South Carolina Archives on October 13-15, 2011 to explore the characteristics of insurgencies and why they have become the preferred form of warfare. The symposium will be a forum for many respected scholars in humanities to present at panels on a variety of insurgency topics including insurgency characteristics, guerrilla activity in South Carolina, the French experience in counterinsurgency, slave insurrections, the Confederacy as an insurgency, communist insurgency in China as well as roundtable discussions comparing the counterinsurgency efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan and the rule of law in counterinsurgencies.
